Every Student, regardless of age or experience, is invited to create a project either as an individual or as part of a small group. While participation is voluntary, students gain so much valuable experience by submitting a project and presenting to our Evening Street community, as evidenced by the enthusiastic, well prepared and confident students every year.
Our goal is to encourage exploration, creativity and practical skills like organization and presentation skills. Traditional science experiments, inventions and studies of the wonders of the world are all welcome in our celebration.
On Thursday January 25th, students will have the opportunity to present their projects to Volunteer Listeners, show their projects to their classmates and return in the evening for an Open House to share their work with family and friends.
The goal is to let the students drive the process and select topics that are important or interesting to them. The best projects are those in which the students can explain with great pride and evidence of learning!
Students and parents might want to brainstorm ideas and get started over Winter Break. Navigate to the Let's Get Started (Menu at the top right of this page).
Science Celebration at a Glance
Good luck with your project, we cannot wait to see what you will do!
- WHO - All grade levels are welcome to participate. Projects may be presented individually or in small groups, including groups across different grades. Parents can be great resources in supporting this project. Kids may need some support getting in tune with their science brain to develop a workable plan. Once they get on track, step aside and see what they can do for themselves!
- WHAT - Because science is all around us, our celebration of science is meant to be diverse. Projects may include a traditional science experiment, an innovative invention, or an exploration of a natural wonder, but these are just a few ideas. Projects are typically displayed on a 3-panel board that unfolds to 48" long by 36" tall.
- WHEN - The Science Celebration is an all-day event on Thursday February 3. In the morning, participants only will come to the science fair to present their projects to our Volunteer Listeners, in a more relaxed and casual setting. In the afternoon, entire classrooms will visit the science fair- there is no presenting here. In the evening is the optional Open House that is open to family and friends. This will give students a second chance to present to share their work with family, friends and volunteer Listeners. Do they have to present? No, it is optional but recommended. It's such a good experience to learn how to present and we would love to hear all about their work!
- For the Open House Presentations, Last names A-H will present from 6:30-7pm. Last names I-Z will present 7-7:30pm. Staggered times were chosen to spread out the student: volunteer ratio. It is recommended but not required to stick to these times. If your family needs to do a different time, that is okay, just do it and you do not need to let me know.
- WHERE - Evening Street Elementary Gym
- SET UP - Wednesday, January 24 from 5-6:30 pm or Thursday, January 25 from 7:55-8:10 am
- PRESENTING is optional- Participants will be called to the Gym during the school day to share their project with our volunteer Listeners, followed by an evening Open House from 6:30-8 pm, where participants may wish to drop by.
- TAKE DOWN - All project displays must be removed from the Gym following the Open House. They may bring their project to their classroom or bring it home that evening.
Good luck with your project, we cannot wait to see what you will do!
